Nutrition

A balanced diet involves eating a variety of foods including fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds; choosing healthier fats and oils, limiting salt and sugar intake; and drinking plenty of water.

But sometimes it can be tricky to know where to start, especially when it comes to incorporating healthier choices into your hectic daily routine. We're often bombarded with so much conflicting advice when it comes to what we should or shouldn't be eating that is simply doesn't seem realistic to eat healthily every day.

For this reason we have worked closely with Health Management Dietitians who are Cairns premier dietitians. All are Accredited Practising Dietitians (APD's) with the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA). Mitch Smith and his team have helped us develop a range of salads that are Health Management Dietitian approved salads. Just look for the symbol.

To help understand all the various classifications below are the definitions that our dietitians use.

  • Low Calorie
We only categorize our salads as low calorie if they contain less than 1600kj per meal.
  • Low Fat
To be low fat, a meal sized portion of salad must contain less that 10g/100g of far and less than 3g per 100g of saturated fat.
  • Low GI
Low GI foods have the advantage that they are broken down and absorbed more slowly into the blood stream.  Eating LOW GI Foods help to keep hunger at bay for longer after eating, they provide a gradual, continuous supply of energy from one meal to the next. Great for those with diabetes, and low energy levels, LOW GI Foods help to keep blood sugar levels stable by providing a slower, more sustained release of sugar into the bloodstream. However, Low GI Foods does not necessary mean a sound health choice, for example chocolate is low-GI, but it’s hardly a healthy choice. Therefore, we only call our salads Low GI if they contain predominately Low GI ingredients.
  • Low Sugar
If a salad contains less than 10g of sugar, per serve in a meal, then we class this salad as low sugar. We never add any additional sweetener; most of the sugars in our salad occur naturally in the salad ingredients.
  • Low Salt
The salad contains less than 120mg per 100g
  • High Protein
The salad contains greater than 12g protein per 100g
  • Gluten Free
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. In some people, eating or drinking anything containing gluten can cause an unpleasant reaction. Many of our salads are gluten free to help those with gluten sensitivity or gluten intolerance.
